IT'S THE HOLIDAY SEASON AND WE ARE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO SHOPPING (BAH HUMBUG!)

It is time to renew your membership to the Columbia Atheists. It is easy to pay your membership fee though PayPal, with your credit or debit card, just scan the QR code. $10 makes you a voting member. Anything more you wish to give will help us move that much closer to achieving our goal of becoming a true nonprofit.

On November 17, Victoria Anderson, State Policy Specialist for American Atheists, gave a passionate presentation concerning the growth of white Christian nationalism and the continuation of Project 2025. Her PowerPoint presentation will be available at www.columbiaathists.org

Save the Dates:

DECEMBER 17 – JOIN US FOR OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY. We will meet at the Broadway Brewery at 6:30 for food, drink and a white elephant gift exchange. Please limit your gift to under $15.

December Calendar

EVERY WEDNESDAY – COLUMBIA ATHEISTS SOCIAL HOUR (or two) at the Broadway Brewery from 7:00 to about 9:00. Enjoy food (if you are hungry), drink (if you whistle needs wetting) and conversation. No minimums.

EVERY SUNDAY - SUNDAY MORNING DISCUSSION - We meet for coffee and discussion Sunday mornings at Fretboard Coffee on Artist Alley, next to the bus station, each Sunday from 10:00 AM to about noon.

DECEMBER 1 – CYBER MONDAY – This is the day we all sit back and buy our presents online. But you better be quick to have the presents deliver before Christmas or Hanukkah.

DECEMBER 4 – NATIONAL COOKIE DAY – Like we need a special day to bake and eat cookies.

DECEMBER 5 – NATIONAL BLUE JEANS DAY – Like cookies, do we really need an excuse?

DECEMBER 7 – NATIONAL PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY – on this day in 1941, the Japanese launched their attack on the U.S. Naval Base in Pearl Harbor. The movie “Tora, Tora, Tora” is the best to watch to remember what happened on this “day of infamy.”

DECEMBER 14 – FIRST NIGHT OF HANUKKAH – A minor holiday in Jewish lore, but elevated because of Christmas. The eight days celebrate the lighting of the sacred lamp for eight days with only one day’s worth of oil.

DECEMBER 15 – NATIONAL BILL OF RIGHTS DAY – A celebration of the Bill of Rights, the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution, which spell out our rights as Americans.

DECEMBER 17 – JOIN US FOR OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY. We will meet at the Broadway Brewery at 6:30 for food, drink and a white elephant gift exchange. Please limit your gift to under $15.

DECEMBER 18 - – The FOOD BANK OF CENTRAL & NORTHEAST MISSOURI NEEDS VOLUNTEERS – Come help at The Food Pantry by packing meals and supplies for those who need help feeding themselves and their families. The Food Pantry has moved to the old Moser’s store, next to the new Aldi’s on Business Loop 70. Contact John Holmes (nhojsemloh@gmail.com) and please register on The Food Bank’s website at (https://sharefoodbringhope.org/volunteer).

DECEMBER 19 – NATIONAL UGLY SWEATER DAY – It’s the day to break out those sweaters that have been languishing in your closet for the past year.

DECEMBER 21 – WINTER SOLSTICE – The shortest daylight day of the year. Think of it this way: Although the winter solstice means the start of winter, it also means the return of more sunlight.

DECEMBER 24 – NATIONAL LAST MINUTE SHOPPER’S DAY – If you have ever been in retail, of a natural procrastinator, you will understand the importance of this day before Christmas.

DECEMBER 25 – NO “L” DAY – OK, it is a bad dad joke, but Merry Christmas to all who celebrate.

DECEMBER 26 – FIRST DAY OF KWANZAA – First celebrated in 1966, Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture.

DECEMBER 31 – NEW YEARS EVE – Stay sober, have a designated driver or Uber your way to and from the parties. We want you to be safe for 2026.

Remember, winter does not start until December 21, so do not complain about the cold weather. The 2025 Farmer’s Almanac may have predicted this one right after all, just may be a cold and snowy winter. Have a great holiday season, be safe and love one another.
