IT IS AUGUST AND THERE ARE NO FEDERAL HOLIDAYS THIS MONTH.

That’s right, but there is good news on the horizon.

If you want to have a word in how Columbia Atheists operates, which direction it takes and the projects we do as a civic minded organization, we are asking for a $10 membership fee.

It is easy to pay your initial membership fee though PayPal or with your credit or debit card. Anything more you wish to give will help us move that much closer to achieving our goal of becoming a true nonprofit. Just scan the QR code and it will take you directly to our PayPal page.

We are asking that you also check the box to help cover the cost of processing.

We are planning to have our second annual General Meeting in September, but a date and location have not yet been chosen.

AUGUST IS INTERNATIONAL PIRATE AND INTERNATIONAL ROMANCE MONTH

Only true Pastafarians can combine the two successfully.

EVERY WEDNESDAY

The Columbia Atheists’ social hour (or two) at the Broadway Brewery from 7:00 to about 9:00. Enjoy food (if you are hungry), drink (if you whistle needs wetting) and conversation. No minimums.

EVERY SUNDAY - SUNDAY MORNING GOSSIP HOUR (OR TWO)

We are meeting for coffee and discussion Sunday mornings at Fretboard Coffee on Artist Alley, next to the Bus station each Sunday from 10:00 AM to about noon.

AUGUST 1 – INDIA PAL ALE DAY (IPA)

Come have a cold one at the Broadway Brewery or your favorite tavern.

AUGUST 2 – INTERNATIONAL BEER DAY

If IPAs are not your thing, you have a second chance to drink whatever is on tap.

AUGUST 4 – NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DAY

Like we need a special day for chocolate chip cookies made from the receipt on the back of the chocolate chips bag, not the ones from those pesky elves.

AUGUST 5 – SPECIAL ELECTION

For those of us in Boone County we will be voting on Proposition 1: “Shall the County of Boone, Missouri exempt senior citizens from increases in the property tax liability to all the taxing authorities due on such senior citizens' primary residence?”

AUGUST 6 – HIROSHIMA DAY

“The observance serves as a reminder of the day when a nuclear weapon was used during an armed conflict between the United States and Japan, and the lives that were lost when an entire city was razed to the ground.”

AUGUST 7 – NATIONAL PUBLIC SPEAKERS DAY

This is a day to celebrate those who are brave enough to stand in front of 10 or 10,000 people and speak their minds.

AUGUST 12 – NATIONAL BASEBALL FANS DAY

We’ll see if the Cardinals and Royals have anything planned.

AUGUST 16 – NATIONAL RUM DAY

Aye, Capt’n Morgan, there seems to be a lot of alcohol days in August. Must be the heat.

AUGUST 20 – COLUMBIA ATHEISTS BOARD MEETING

You are invited to join us at 6:00 PM at the Broadway Brewery for our short meeting. You can also pay your dues at that time. Our social time will start at 7:00.

AUGUST 21 – The FOOD BANK OF CENTRAL & NORTHEAST MISSOURI NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Come help at The Food Pantry by packing meals and supplies for those who need help feeding themselves and their families. The Food Pantry has moved to the old Moser’s store, next to the new Aldi’s on Business Loop 70. Contact John Holmes (nhojsemloh@gmail.com) and please register on The Food Bank’s website at (https://sharefoodbringhope.org/volunteer).

AUGUST 31 – NATIONAL SPEAK KIND WORDS SATURDAY

Need I say more.

SAVE THESE DATES: OCTOBER 5 AND 6 – MID-MO PRIDEFEST

We will have our canopy setup and would love to have you come and join us to sign-up new members, and educate the public about atheism and our role with the LGBTQ+ community.

August is predicted to be a hot one this year. Stay cool, drink lots of water and use plenty of sunscreen.
